Cairo can make one Very Lazy

For general interest for any planning travelers and newbies to Cairo, regarding shops, and some info for old timers as well near bottom, regarding catering services and Gourmet Egypt.

No one really really needs to leave the house for food etc. All stores, pharmacies, fast food outlets etc, all will deliver your order. This is totally true of the Maadi, Digla area and sure it exists in most other areas of Cairo.

Hints: First find your favorite food store(s) and pharmacies - get to know them a bit, and get their number. One requirement is ensure their command of English is good enough so you can communicate. Usually your order will arrive with 30 minutes to 1 hour. Expect some mix-ups from time to time so check order when you receive. Also good idea ask total price on phone so if you don't have correct change, tell them to bring change - send change for 100LE, or whatever big bill you have. Delivery Boy will not have change. The boy who delivers is usually not paid any salary so makes his income by doing the delivering and is pleased for whatever he will receive. Don't be too cheap as future deliveries may get more delayed if they are busy.

Stores are plentiful in Maadi area (and throughout Cairo)with a few to mention as Metro (open 24 hours on Road 9) Miram Market (Digla), Kimo (Digla, Seoudi, (Digla), Maasoud (Top of Road 9 and is handy if you want few beer included with delivery). Note: at all stores there is only street parking which can be big hassle most times. There are more stores for sure. You can find numbers easy by phoning 8000 on Mobinil (Don't know about Vodafone or other one) Or check Egypt yellow pages online. LINK

Our personal take is we like to see the meat, fish, and vegetables before buying, but each to their own. And rarely might go to Carrefour, our local Mega store - but no imported foods, but you can buy Refrigerators to Eggs. Free parking. But choose you visit time carefully as can get really packed. If adventurous, try the Souks (your driver will know where)

Pharmacies are everywhere but two I use most are Alaa Pharmacy 23782710 (Road 87 across from Maadi Canal school) and for 24 hours on beside HSBC opposite grands mall. Also Hindan at top or road 9 under the flyover (big pharmacy) Just note - In Egypt Pharmacists do not require a Dr's Prescription, at least no any of the drugs I order.

OK, you don't want to cook! - try any of the numerous fast food outlets, all home delivery. My kids favorites are Pizza Hut 19000, McDonalds 19991, KFC 19019, Gaya Sushi 25197769, Peking 25164218.
As a late edit to this post, I have scanned a page from the "croc" for other Maadi "take outs" Click to enlarge so you can read it.

Enjoy

Want some Booze - phone Drinkies for home delivery. 19330

Catering - Having a party, and prefer to leave work to others, got to try the The German Baker, or as some now call him German Mike, real name Michael Dahmen. And yes he does specialize in German food but can turn out whatever you like with impressive flair. He gets busy at times, so try and give him as much notice as possible. See his web site LINK and mob phone is 010-5154317

Gourmet Egypt must be mentioned as their imported food is SO GOOD - received fresh frozen, and deliveries to you home are right on the money, time wise. LINK 19339

Clothes Ironing - (Mackwa) You can have your ironing collected and delivered ironed, folded and on hangers. Cost range from 12 to 17 LE. Cheap!

All the delivery comments assumes you don't send your Bowab, Gardener, Maid, Driver, or Cook out to shop.(YUP some have this whole extended family - not me, we are poor with only bowab, part time gardener and part time maid). Under no circumstances send husband - we never get it right.!!!!!!!Life is ruff eh!
