Update from Home Wifi Post

The previous post I had left reader with statement I was going to purchase a new router to improve my Wifi Range. So I did, and went for a Linksys WRT160N purchased from Sistrun on their Website. The Linksys advertising was phenomenal Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router Maximize wireless coverage. Network faster than ever before.

OK here is the adventure and results.

Ordered from Sistrum's web price was 759 LE plus shipping and handling at 28 LE plus 10% sales tax = 805 LE. I ordered COD. Phone call from Sistrum next day to confirm available but price was 783 + 35 KE shipping plus sales tax 10% = 900LE. Said OK and 2 days later it was received at my home. Happy me.

Opened box and nice looking router so disconnected my old Netgear DG 834G and connected up the new pretty Linksys just like old was connected. Inserted the install CD and off we went. It would not install. Phoned Sistrum and they gave me their technical guy and after some discussion and checking internet come to find the Linksys connects to a modem they assume everyone has???? Ok so next step was to modify my netgear router (with modem built in) and disable the wireless so to use as a modem only. My desktop could still not access the Linksys with install disk. Getting kind of pissed by now so as last resort connected my laptop and low and behold installed new Linksys, configured it, and it was working in wireless mode. Happy me.

The range test - connected all my wireless computers - desktop in daughter's bedroom, Linux one downstairs in family room, and the laptop. My desktop was still connected to old Netgear router with ethernet cable. Now, expecting huge numbers and speed from this wireless beasts - only to be hugely disappointed. It was no better than my old Netgear, and actually a bit worse with range. So went back and googled reviews on this Linksys WRT160N and found some on CNET. Looked mostly at negative ones and all these confirmed my findings. Maybe all the positive reviews come from Linksys employee's?

Conlclusion - I am back using my old Netgear proper router. Have a fancy looking LinkSys Broadband wireless manger thing for sale.

Advice - Study new things better than I did. Read users installation guides, check reviews on net before buying junk sold with what I can call false advertising.
