How to Download Movies, TV Series etc. for Home Entertainment

I have been doing this for a few years and as people ask me, from time to time, how to do it. So, maybe the topic is worth a post. It seems complicated, with just a quick read, but if interested go through this simply step by step.

My comments are focused for Egypt but are applicable world wide. It really is not difficult but for some the following hints will help as many do not know what a torrent system is, or maybe have never heard of it. Simply it is a system to download files and share to upload to others and is far superior to using other P2P programs such as limewire, emule etc. Also if you wish to watch on TV at home after you burn the movie you need a DIVX compatible player.(Others found theirs at Carrfour for about 500LE). Of course you can watch on your computer (May need some additional audio and video codec but that is pretty straight forward).

1) You need a reasonable download speed. I have 2 Meg contract with TE data and download 700 mb movies in about 1 1/2 hours. My download speed is almost constant at 200 KB/s. You can check what the maximum you could ever expect by starting the download at openoffice.org which has about the fastest download servers in the world. You don't have to download the whole file but leave it for about 5 minutes and you can see with the windows download manager what speed you could expect. So at 200 KB/s = 1 1/2 Hours for 700 MB file you can calculate proportionally.
2) You will need a Torrent Client to download so go ahead and download Utorrent. I will walk you through the various settings but read the Excellent Guidelines. For Linux OS you can use Ktorrent or Deluge.
3) Before we get into Utorrent preference settings create 2 new folders on your C drive. I call mine temptorrent and torrent. This is where you will tell Utorrent to keep incomplete downloads and where to move completed torrents.
4) Utorrent - go to Options - Preferences and you will see on left side a list of various set up pages. You can leave General and UI settings at defaults. Click on Directories. This is where you will put in the directories you created. You can browse but using the little buttons on right side of all the boxes. At top put in temptorrent and bottom Torrent and then repeat for bottom two at bottom half of page. Click Apply at bottom of page.
On page Connections make sure all the boxes are checked and do not change proxy at bottom, unless you need to. You may have to come back here later depending on weather or not your router supports UNpP. Click Apply
On Bandwidth page you will only change upload limit at top of page. Example. My speed downloading openoffice I got 214 KB/s so 10% is 21.4 and rounded this up to 25. On second box is asked about upload rate when not downloading I put in 50. Click Apply
On BiTtorrent page ensure Protocol Encyptation Outgoing is Enabled and the Allow incoming Legacy connections is checked. This has to do with hiding you a bit from the IP server. Click Apply (if you changed anything from the default)
On Queuing Page look at seed ratio - I set mine to 100 meaning I will allow seeding, or giving back, the same amount I downloaded. This is a personal choice but not nice to be a lecher.
Next page is Scheduler. As torrents can be a bandwidth hog I only allow downloads during hours when kids would not normally be on computer. Click Apply. However at anytime you can Pause - Stop - Delete torrents from the program itself or from right click on the Icon in you desktop running programs at lower right side of screen.

Your done for now! Was that to hard?

Download a torrent movie.
You can close the Utorrent program now as I do not use the search feature inside the file on right hand side. The best quality movies are from and uploader called axxo. He can be found at this link All this persons movies should fit on a 700 mb CD. There are others as well. Another site I use is btjunkie for global searches but make sure to read comments, look at file size to make sure it is reasonable, and has good number of seeders.

Go to any movie you wish and click on movie title to read some information about the movie and read comments. BTW pay attention to number of seeders, higher the number the better. To download the movie click the down arrow. You will see the windows download manager pop up (ignore this) then Utorrent pop up will appear. This shows you files that will be downloaded - any you don't want un-check. Click OK and you torrent will start to download and upload. Also if you wish to read an "nfo" files in the downloads for more information after the download right click on the nfo file and say open with notepad.

Only thing now is to check at bottom of utorrent page that a little green check mark is present after some time. Is so means all is OK with your router and you are downloading and Uploading properly. If not your router is not using UNpP properly and you will need to do Port Forwarding (see Guidelines and explanation on how to do this).

On last thing is after your torrents are completed downloading and seeding you can remove them and have choices. Highlight the torrent and right click and you can chose to remove torrent from list, remove torrent from list and also remove all data and files from your hard drive.

Burning CD's
Best is download a free program called DivX player. Using DivX player you can go to folder that contains your completed torrents - open folder then click on movie (AVI) file. It will start to play. You can drag the progress button to scroll the movies quickly to be sure sound is lip sync and complete movie has been obtained. Assuming all is OK insert disk and drag movie title over to disk on right had side, and if all OK with disk, click burn. It does not take long. Or can also use DVD 4.7 GB disks and I can usually download about 5 movies on one disk, or all or most of a TV series.

This is a bit long winded but hope it helps others. Enjoy the movies

On a final note not all CD's and DVD's are made equal. Stick with the better names as Memorex, TDK (but then these might be Chinese clones as well). I buy in packs of 50 and always have a couple of bums in the stack.
