Google testing TV search

Search giant Google is testing a new television-programming search service in conjunction with the Dish Network Corp. The service runs on television set-top-boxes containing Google designed software and allows users to find specific shows on TV satellite services as well as on Google's YouTube.

The move marks the latest in a series of developments in which companies are attempting to merge broadcast television with Internet provided services. Last week, TiVo Inc. announced new digital video recorders that blend broadcast and online content.

Google's project is being tested by company employees and their families who can enter their enquiries via a keyboard. The service could be discontinued or rolled out to a wider audience at anytime, a source told the Journal. Google refused to issue a statement saying the company does not commment on rumor or speculation. Dish Network has also declined to comment on the reports.

Whether the service rolls out to the general public is unclear. Google often tries out projects in private before allowing a select group to try them. It's colaborative communication tool Google Wave still remains in a development stage and has only been rolled out to around a million users worldwide.

A different school assembly (Video)

Every school that has ever had a uniform policy has had issues with the enforcement of such a policy. In an attempt to get buy-in from his pupils, a local Cape Town school teacher employed a very different approach to a morning assembly.

Warning : You are about to be thoroughly entertained for the next 20 mins! Make sure you see the two minute 'highlights package' at the end of part 2.

Z News - On a small screen near you?

Watching the pilot of a potential television program by cartoonist Zapiro (Jonathan Shapiro), it seems a shame the SABC has taken around nine months not to make a decision whether to commission a series called Z News.
Fashioned on the UK institution Spitting Image, the show proposes to take the (in)famous Zapiro critical look on the South Africa's politicians and current affairs to a much broader audience. The producers, Zapiro and Thierry Cassuto, were hoping to have the program aired before this year's elections with the aim to help educate the voting public to critically analyse candidates, parties and issues. However nine months after the pilot was handed to the SABC nothing was come to fruition.

So we can currently view offerings here and at this Facebook group.

You can also click here and add you voice to get this show on to South African television.

Darren Scott's Zimbabwe Embassy Prank Call

For those of you who missed this.

Enjoy

Friday SA Music - Natalie Chapman

Not been a great fan of local radio, there are times when I miss out when artists make it into rotation on some of the regional stations.
Natalie Chapman, by all accounts is one of those. But the SA online world (samusic.co.za in particular) lead me to her this week. Her music is described as acoustic folk, but I would add 'with a dash of country.' Her voice is easy on the ear, and her compositions extremely listenable. She is another one of our artists in the brink of becoming a household name as her music will hold a broad appeal, particularly those who appreciate the adult contemporary genre.
Although her cd "Between the lines' is advertised on her website as being available @ Kalahari.net, I was unable to locate it there, so I would suggest taking a listen at her Myspace page, and if you like click here to get a personalised signed copy.

Friday tune

I found my good friend Wes on YouTube the other day. I am ashamed to say it's of a gig I never made it to and was posted in May last year.
Do yourself a favour and press play. You will not be dissappointed. It's a great way to ease into the weekend.

Watershed live (Video)

Last Sunday the family went to watch the South African music institution, Watershed at Cape Town's Kirstenbosch Summer Concert Series.

This is not a review, but it should be said, as always Kirstenbosch is a great venue and Watershed have yet to disappoint the many times we have seen them live.

I came across this live version of Indigo Girl, their mega-hit on YouTube. Their live version differs from year to year and understandably is very different to the original album track released seven years ago now.

Those of you in Cape Town, diarise 10 February when another of SA's mega-groups The Parlatones are due for the performance in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

Dinner for one (Same as every year)

I don't see this classic on the local TV schedules so enjoy a bit of tradition, with Miss Sophie, Sir Toby, Admiral von Schneider, Mr Pommeroy, Mr Winterbottom and , of course,James.

Although the exact history of the play doesn't seem too clear what is certain is that the rights eventually belonged to Freddy Frinton and will always be most associated with him. It was first performed on German television and is still a massive hit there every year. Freddy Frinton was "the superlative stage drunk", fascinating as he was a confirmed teetotaler ... and played James! I colour version was scheduled to be shot in 1968 but Frinton had a heart attack just three weeks before filming was to begin.

Download Online Video

How often do you see a video on a site and you really wish you could download it and keep it in a safe place. Us bandwidth starved South African have the additional problem in that every time we show someone that cool, interesting short we eat into a meager monthly cap.
So wouldn't it be preferable to rather download the video once?
Clearly there are many that think so, as it is something I am regularly asked. So here is the answer Keepvid.com

It takes just three simple steps.
  1. This is probably the most complicated. Locate the exact url of the video. This is not necessarily the website or blog website you find the video so you may need to click on the video or navigate to the host site.
  2. Copy the link and paste it into the textbox at the top of the site.
  3. You will be given a link to click on and download.
Enjoy.
