Facebook Login | Facebook Yes or No

Facebook login
Image via Wikipedia

Facebook Login- Facebook Yes or No? Do you really want to login? Could you be doing better things or would you prefer to just waste time on Facebook like millions of other people do? There's no right or wrong answer here, just Yes or No. We all use Facebook these days and it raises some questions for most of us.

I'm not on topic today with this post, I'm having some fun and am curious. This blog is about Dish Network TV and getting the best deal. It just seems odd that so many people search for the Facebook Login page everyday. We have browser history, favorites and bookmark features on our computers and mobile devices. Almost everybody has used a computer and been online. You would think that a search like this would be uncommon since we go there daily and already have a Facebook page.

Some of us use Facebook as a means of keeping in touch or connecting with old friends. A large percentage of Facebook users just go there to play and waste time. Maybe that leads to the answer of why do some of us have to search to login to Facebook. Have we become so programmed to search for everything that we even search for this? What do you think? It's only the most popular website on the planet. Comment below and share your answer. I will see you all on Facebook later lol.

Facebook "Videos" virus and scam

Facebook "Videos" virus and scam

Thousands of Facebook users are reporting that they have been hit by a malware attack posing as a video of young bikini-clad women on a beach.

The messages are posted on the walls of Facebook members, seemingly from their friends and associates on the site, with a thumbnail which appears to be an image of a young woman's bottom in a bikini.

The messages read:

, this is hilarious! lol Distracting Beach Babes [HQ] Length: 5:32

The "Distracting Beach Babes" scam appears to be the latest incarnation of the widespread "Sexiest Video Ever" assault.

The "Sexiest Video Ever" messages reads:

, this is without doubt the sexiest video ever!

accompanied by what appears to be a video with the title "Candid Camera Prank [HQ]". The message has what appears to be a movie thumbnail of a woman on a bicycle wearing a short skirt, and the video's length is given as 3:17.

See the Facebook Sexiest Video Ever attack and how it works on the video below

Facebook Homepage change coming

Start preparing yourselves Facebook users. Next week your home page is going to be changing. As Facebook moves a more 'live' or real time experience the live feed will now be taking centre stage, or column. While this has the potential to create a load of noise, you will be able to filter the stream via friend lists.
The other major change Facebook will be adding will allow you to publish directly into this stream, rather than having to navigate to other Facebook pages.

Z News - On a small screen near you?

Watching the pilot of a potential television program by cartoonist Zapiro (Jonathan Shapiro), it seems a shame the SABC has taken around nine months not to make a decision whether to commission a series called Z News.
Fashioned on the UK institution Spitting Image, the show proposes to take the (in)famous Zapiro critical look on the South Africa's politicians and current affairs to a much broader audience. The producers, Zapiro and Thierry Cassuto, were hoping to have the program aired before this year's elections with the aim to help educate the voting public to critically analyse candidates, parties and issues. However nine months after the pilot was handed to the SABC nothing was come to fruition.

So we can currently view offerings here and at this Facebook group.

You can also click here and add you voice to get this show on to South African television.

South African Banks on Facebook

The Facebook adoption by the big four SA banks is , in some cases rather interesting:
  • ABSA have one fan page on Facebook with 2488 fans.
Although an ABSA fan page, this has been geared more around the Currie Cup than actual banking. It's heavily branded with Currie Cup information, photo's and videos of their Currie Cup TV commercials. However they do seem to respond to wall posts made by their customers, even posting a TV ad script when requested.

  • FNB have one fan page aimed at the their Premier Bankers with 73 fans.
It's a very informative, has upcoming events, weekly economic updates from their chief economist and some interactive tools. They also appear to respond to posts, albeit they have only had two. I do find it odd that FNB have chosen this market (those earning R350k to R1mill a year) to target on Facebook though. If they are looking to keep things managable and niche, perhaps the student market would make more sense? They have made good use of Facebook for the various events they are naming sponsors for namely the FNB Classic Clashes, The Varsity Cup and Whiskey Live Festival

  • Nedbank has no banking consumer orientated Facebook presence. They do have a page dedicated to the Nedbank Local Heroes, where you can nominate a worthy cause or person for a R10 000.00 prize. A touch I like is the videos they have included of the nominated heroes.

  • I couldn't find any evidence of Standard Bank having any official presence on Facebook other than someone who has setup up a persona with a Standard Bank logo.

It would seem that ABSA has a clear lead when it comes to using Facebook to interact and communicate to it's customers. The beauty of this platform, if they do this right, is the positive image the bank can portray to their customers, as well as those who are customers of other banking institutions, as they react timeously to queries, suggestions etc posted on the fan page wall . The public display of helpfulness is priceless PR. Of course, the opposite can also be true as they leave themselves open to public displays of unhappiness.

It's going to be interesting to see how corporate South Africa use Facebook and it's online social media competitors to connect to their clients.

Facebook chat - Very Neat

I sneaked a quick look at my Facebook profile this afternoon and the little bubble pictured on the left popped up ate the bottom of the page.
You can now see who of your Facebook friends are online and chat with them realtime, instead of waiting for your wall to update.
The implementation is very neat, although do I really want my 'friends' to know that I am logged into Facebook?
I guess time will tell.

Need a Facebook status?

For some it's imperative that their Facebook status is always up-to-date and their friends are always aware of when they take care of their ablutions, brush their teeth, have perceived brilliant thoughts etc. Others never update their status. Then their are others ...

How about these?
  • lamenting the death of canoodling accumulations
  • secretly yearning for talcum-powdered pyjamas
  • intimidated by overrated bananas
  • composing a haiku about mouthwateringly succulent proctologists
If these resonate, click over to the "Facebook Status Generatr" and confuse the hell out of your buddies!

SAReunited advertises on it's adversary

There was been a fair amount of comment here at Eish!! over the future of SAReunited.com ever since my first post 'Is there a future for SAReunited.com' even drawing comment from the one of the co-founders.
The original article centred around the fact the emergence of Facebook would ultimately make SARenuited defunct.
So I couldn't help but chuckle when I saw the following in my Facebook feed. Nothing like using your competition to get traction! It seems as if they are not going down without a fight, good on them.

Eish!! on (or is that in) Facebook

This is going to be the last Facebook post for some time ... I hope. Truly!

I would just like to acknowledge Art from Online Trek. He has started a Facebook group for the readers & supporters of this blog. Is extremely gratifying to know that there are readers who take the time to read my ramblings on a very regular basis, comment and now even sign up to a group.

If you are interested to see who else reads Eish!! click here.

To those of you who have already done so, many thanks.

Is there a future for Sareunited.com?

I have mentioned in previous posts how I have been drawn into the Facebook subculture. It's been an ironic seduction, especially as it had it's genesis when I was messing around to research for the article : Facebook, am I missing something!

One thing struck me as I browsed through my list of friends the other day. A few years ago I joined Sareunited. There slogan : "Connecting South Africans Everywhere." It was a great idea, allowing you to find and interact with your old schoolmates. It has been a great success story and, it must be said, almost an essential service considering how South Africans have spread their wings and found themselves living all over the world.
Now as Facebook sweeps across South Africa as it has done else where across the world, I have found those same people that were listed in Sareunited on Facebook. The difference being, you now have an profile to look at and you are able to interact easily.

The problem with starting a conversation with someone you haven't seen in 5, 10, 20 years via email, is how do you start? How much of yourself do you reveal when you write that first, 'this is me?' Now with Facebook that is all taken care of in the first 'Add XYZ as friend.' The act of requesting and confirming is like that first 'Hi,' handshake, or whatever greeting gesture takes you fancy. Now you are able to see what your friend has been up to and is currently doing. Without having to send mails back and forth, you are able to keep up to date with their movements, and it's unobtrusive.

I went back for a browse @ Sareunited and, it must be said it suddenly feels rather archaic ... web 1.0-ish. It's rather sad, and I sincerely hope they find a way of reinventing the site. In my case there are still more contacts in my Sareunited account then in my Facebook profile, but then two things must be remembered. I haven't been active in Facebook for 2 months yet, and there is no telling how many of those contacts in Sareunited actually have details that are updated. It will be a shame if a great South African product becomes defunct. There is a massive database, active or not, of South Africans who invested their time inputting their details @ Sareunited and I can't help but think that this resource is not being utilised creatively creatively.

To close I must state that I did send Sareunited a request for comment on how they intend meeting this competition, but to date have not had a response. Let's hope that's because they are burning the midnight oil as they work on exciting new features.

Facebook - Please convince me

So since my previous post I have been dabbling in Facebook. It's beginning to grow on me, but the thought of having another thing I need to keep up to date with scares me. It's great to find friends you haven't heard from for ever, but after the initial 'poke' are you expected to daily interactions? What constitutes being rude in these communities?

I did enjoy this post @ Web Worker Daily. It seems that I am not the only one with reservations about this platform.

Now readers, convince me to the contrary.

Facebook, am I missing something?

Blogs, office talk, newspaper, radio. Everyone's talking about Facebook.

Facebook was founded in February 2004 by a Harvard University student Mark Zuckerberg just three months after Tom Anderson founded MySpace, the other big social networking competitor. So it's not a new phenomenon. But it's clearly suddenly making it's mark here in South Africa. Check out this Amatomu buzz graph and you will see how man.

Now I classify myself as an early adopter, but when I first heard of Facebook a few years ago, it was always as the ugly Myspace competitor. Still neither really resonated with me then though and I still don't really think I have grasped the reason for viral popularity. I mean I really wanted to be part of the 'in crowd' and all, but just couldn't see the point of taking the step and signing up, other than to secure my name. So let me try fight their case though and see if I can convince myself to become a 'Facebooker'.
  • I am told you can chat to your friends via Facebook - but I can do that through Skype, GoogleTalk, MSN Messenger and a whole host of other IMs.
  • You can also send messages - That's odd, I thought you could just use email for that?
  • OK, but you can upload photos - Been doing that for ages on Flickr and Picasa
  • But wait, you can hook up with old school, varsity & work mates - Again, there's a whole load of other sites I can and have used for just that, starting at the school website and, in my case, including SAReunited.
  • There's a messageboard - old hat
  • But it's a free website - I set up my first free website using AngelFire about 10 years ago.
But wait ... perhaps the beauty is it's all in one place? Maybe, perhaps that's the secret. I am still not convinced.

... but I refuse to be left behind, so off I go, time to join!!!

Eish!! just can't help myself, here's me.
