Mobile Phones - why no universal charging plug?

EU major companies have signed agreement to have micro-usb charging port as standard by 2012. But that is future - and I class that as "for sure, maybe"

We have all been out and about, and damn mobile phone battery is dead. No one with you with has same phone charger plug, even if they brought their charger with them. However, if in public place maybe you will find a free charger station -

One company, RABBIT Group, headed by Steve Roberts, is setting up to help the public with automatic charging machines, set up in malls, clubs, and maybe even the more popular restaurants. You can charge your phone free. Yesterday, he set one up in ACE Club for the members use. It could charge several phones at once, and has multiple port selectors for each phone. As there are over 30 different ports for mobiles, it could be you will not find yours, but for more popular models the different ports are there. Here is pic of one set-up in ACE.
Or you might see this free standing one in mall

OK what is the gimmick, as nothing in life is free. Well, it is simple. Steve sells advertising that shows on the screen so you have something to watch when waiting for your phone to charge - at least enough to keep you going. So, if you wish to advertise this seems to be a very innovative approach.

Here is RABBIT group contact card. Steve could send you a presentation and you can contact him rabbitgroup@gmail.com

With over 30 different types of charger available for mobile phones throughout the EU, according to the BBC, the adoption of the micro USB port, is set to create a precedent unlike any before. This could well roll out to laptops, netbooks and other devices. However still nothing through for north America yet.

This is a photo of a micro - usb charging port, amongst few others for comparison.
