Bird Flu (H1N5) - Pigeons and other Local Birds

I had heard that Pigeons were immune to Bird Flu which seemed great news as there are numerous pigeon hobbyists in Egypt. But, totally immune seems not true, although risk is very low.

Here is article published by dailymail UK albeit 2006. A google search brought up several similar articles with same conclusions as stated below.

Pigeons will not bring the deadly bird flu virus to cities, experts say.

The birds, a common sight in London's Trafalgar Square, are not immune from the H5N1 strain, but tests show they pick it up only when they are exposed to very high doses. Even then, they do not always become infected and are carriers only briefly.

US government scientists looking for the first signs of H5N1 bird flu are focusing on wild migratory birds, not those such as pigeons and sparrows that stay close to home.

Researcher David Swayne said: "Pigeons are not uniformly susceptible like chickens or ducks."

Infected pigeons carried the virus for about 10 days. But they were infectious for only two days and then at levels below what it would normally take to infect a chicken.

However, in February, a pigeon seller of 14 died in Iraq after suffering bird flu-like symptoms.
