Update of Major Traffic Accidents/Death on Egypt Roads

Only multiple deaths warrant getting into the news. Accidents happen in all other countries, but here in Egypt there is a death wish driver culture. Deliberate abuse of road rules, carelessnes, speeding, coupled with many roads in poor condition. I personally will never drive on any highway at night - bad enough in daytime.

Source of data is Egypt Daily News Archive, under crime section.

This log of death ridden incidents starts Jan 1, 2008 and I periodically update as these dreaful events occur. I have created a sumary table of the deaths to get the idea more quickly that reading the full articles. In another post I quoted an article as Egypt No. 1 in World for Traffic Deaths from a survey of 35 world countries in terms of the number of road accidents deaths - statistics registered 156 deaths for each 100,000 vehicles.

Top Online Digital TV Antenna Retailers

If you have chosen the type of antenna you need and also decided on a certain brand then the next step is to choose which retailer you want to make your purchase from. The easiest and most hassle free way would be to purchase direct from the manufacturer but not all manufacturers sell directly and if they do their prices are usually around 15%-30% higher than most retailers.

Below we have provided a list of some of the top online digital TV antenna retailers. This list includes retailers that have a large selection of antennas, offer competitive prices, and are known from providing good customers service. If you are still trying to choose a specific TV antenna brand then you can check out our top TV antenna brands page.

Solid Signal: Solid Signal is a great antenna retailer. They provide one of the largest selections of antennas and have some of the best prices online. They are well known and all orders we have done through them have come quickly and hassle free.

Manufacturer Direct: One option for getting your antenna is buy direct from the manufacturer. In some cases this is the easiest option because most manufacturers stand behind their products 100%. This can make returns and exchanges easier if something is wrong with your antenna or it doesn't work well in your area. Unfortunately manufacturers usually price their antennas at MSRP and do not drop them so you will end up paying a lot more if you buy them direct. In order to get retailers to carry their products manufacturers who sell direct often promise to keep their prices higher.

Amazon: Amazon is one of the most trusted names for online purchases worldwide. Amazon provides an extremely largest selection of antennas at some of the most affordable prices. Amazon is also know for having great customer service.

Digital TV Antenna Installation Tips

If you have already checked out the section on our blog about the different types of TV antennas and used our TV antenna reviews to pick out an antenna then the next step is it install your antenna. In regards to TV antenna installation we are not experts because we focus mainly on the retail side of things. Despite this we have put together a short list of TV antenna installation tips that we feel will help you through the installation process.

It is however important to note that TV antenna installation can be quite dangerous and if you feel uncomfortable with the process you should always seek professional help.

Tip 1 - The Higher The Better

A general rule that is found with digital TV antennas is that the higher you mount it the better. UHF signaling is based on line of sight so the higher you mount your antenna the better. Getting it higher means that there is a better chance that there will be less objects obstructing the line of sight between the signaling tower and your digital antenna. If you live more than 70 miles away from the TV signal tower then you might have to mount your antenna very high by building some sort of tower to place it on.

Tip 2 - Outdoor Antenna Installation Is Better Than Indoor Installation

If you want to get the best reception and signal gain you need to get an outdoor antenna. This is because outdoor antennas can often be installed higher which means that they can get a better signal. Outdoor antennas also provide better reception because the digital signal from the tower is not being blocked by walls before it reaches the antenna. TV antenna signal issues indoors are quite similar to indoor cell phone signal issues. Sometimes mounting your antenna in an attic can work quite well but again the digital signal will be forced to penetrate a roof before it reaches your antenna. Indoor antennas can get the job done but an outdoor antenna will do a better job of providing clear reception and may even bring in a few extra channels.

Tip 3 - You Can't Go Wrong With Professional Installation

If your antenna installation job appears to be very difficult then you can always consider having a professional come out to install it. This will of course cost money but it might go a long way in allowing you to get the best possible reception and the most channels.

Tip 4 - Be Sure To Face The Front Of The Antenna Towards The Transmitting Tower

In order to get the best reception you need to figure out where the closest TV transmitting tower is and be sure to face the front of your antenna toward it. If you are not sure where the nearest antenna tower is there are various websites available that provide this information.

Tip 5- Be Sure To Seal All Outdoor Connections With A Waterproof Sealant

If you have an outdoor antenna you need to seal all connections with some type of waterproof sealant because rain and humidity may cause your connections to corrode and result is lower antenna performance. Corroded connections can cause 25%-90% signal loss.

Tip 6 - Keep Cable Runs As Short As Possible And Don't Use Splitters

The longer the cable runs the more signal loss. Do your best to minimize the cable length from antenna to digital tuner. You want to find a cable that is just long enough to reach rather than one that has quite a bit of extra useless length. Generally you can lose as much as 30% of the signal for every 100 ft of RG6 cable. Splitters can also cause signal loss between 40%-60%.

Tip 7 - Grounding Your Antenna Can Save It From Electrical Surges

It is a good idea to ground your antenna with a coaxial cable by using a coaxial surge protector. This will protect your antenna from being fried due to nearby lightning strikes. To protect from a direct strike you will need a lightening arrester which is difficult to install and might not comply with local antenna restrictions.

Tip 8 - Locate And Avoid All Power lines During Installation

Power lines and be dangerous and cause electrocution if you are touching an antenna while it comes into contact with a power line.

Tip 9 - Do Not Attempt To Install An Outdoor Antenna During Harsh Weather Conditions likes High Winds, Rain, Ice, or Snow

Harsh weather conditions can be dangerous for installing antennas and raise the risk of falling off
the roof.

Tip 10 - Safety, Safety, Safety

The most important thing to remember when installing a TV antenna is to think about your safety before anything else. Installing a rooftop antenna can be very dangerous and even cause death if you fall from high up.

Types Of TV Antennas: Description Of The Most Popular Types Of TV Antennas

When doing research and trying to decide which TV antenna to purchase the first and most important step is to educate yourself on the different types of antennas available. Without having an idea of whats out there there is no way anyone could possibly be able to pick the antenna that best suits their needs. It is not until you do this that you should even begin to look at TV antenna reviews and think about purchasing an antenna.

There are a bunch of different types of TV antennas to choose from and each type has different features and characteristics that make it better for certain situations. There are different subsets of features that come with antennas including the type of signal they pick up, where they can be placed, and their signal gain strength. As far as signaling goes antennas can be made to pick up UHF, VHF, or digital signals. For placement you can get either an indoor or outdoor antenna. Finally, you can choose between a standard non-amplified or amplified antenna with the amplified one having better signal gain. There are also smart antennas, which we will be going over below. Below we have provide a short explanation of the different types of TV antennas in order to give you an idea of which type of antennas best suits your needs.

Our suggestion is that you purchase a digital VHF/UHF dual band antenna no matter what. It is nearly a given that you need it to have these three functions. Beyond that you will need to research your needs regarding the amount of signal gain you will need in dB or miles. This will tell you whether you will need an indoor or outdoor antenna and whether you need the extra power of an amplifier or not. As far as signal strength gaines go an indoor non-amplified usually gives you the least gain and an outdoor amplified usually gives you the most gain.

UHF TV Antennas

UHF stands for ultra high frequency and was first used for television in 1952. When the FCC made UHF signals available for television channels they first dedicated 70 different channels to it but eventually switch 13 of these channels from television to cell phone use. Within the next several years more of the UHF band is going to be switched over from TV to cell phone use. At this time the UHF band will consist of channels 14-51. Most TV channels use the UHF band so it is important to get an antenna that can pick up UHF signals. It is also important to note that a lot of HD broadcasts are on the UHF band so it is good to get an antenna that picks up UHF signals if you are interested in HDTV.

VHF TV Antennas

VHF stands for very high frequency and these types of antennas are what we all know as rabbit ear antennas. Standard VHF antennas are very basic and serve little purpose in today's digital only television world. These antenna usually only work if you are very close to the TV tower because they lack signal gain power. VHF antennas are generally separated into different channels frequencies (2-6 and 7-13) so you need to be sure to get an antenna that can pick up the channels you need. You can get powerful VHF antennas but they are generally very large, cost a lot, and are difficult to install. VHF antennas are still of use today because VHF signals are still used by local stations, you just have to be sure to get one that isn't so basic that it doesn't help at all.. It is usually a good idea to get an antenna that has some sort of VHF capabilities but VHF isn't as important as UHF. Often times you can get a UHF antenna that comes with weak yet present VHF capabilities too.

Digital TV Antennas

Digital antennas are designed for today's post digital transition television environment that we are all becoming accustomed to. Most digital channels broadcast in the UHF band but there are some that broadcast in VHF. A digital TV antenna is a must since there are very few channels that are still broadcasting in analog. A converter box coupled with a digital VHF/UHF dual band antenna has been working very well for people who were suffering signal loss after the digital transition.

HDTV Antennas

There are tons of antennas out there that are advertised as HD but there isn't really an HDTV antenna. You get HDTV by having an HDTV tuner, not from having an HDTV antenna. There are some characteristics that make antennas a little better at picking up HDTV signals but in general any high powered UHF antenna will do a very good job. Companies began using the word HDTV antenna in order to make their product sound spiced up and better it really doesn't mean much at all.

Smart Antennas

All smart antennas come as digital antennas. The special thing about smart antennas is that they can remember your antenna location for each specific channel and then automatically move when you switch channels. This allows you to get the best reception without having to manually adjust your antenna whenever you change the channel. They are specifically designed to work with smart antenna compatible converter boxes.

Non-Amplified Antennas

Non-Amplified Antennas generally provide less signal gain. They are good in situations where you only need a minimal amount of gain in order to get the channels you want/need. There is no need to get a high powered amplified antenna if you are just barely out of the TV signals range.

Amplified Antennas

Amplified antennas provide a higher amount of signal gain than non-amplified ones and they are specifically designed for areas where you are further away from the signaling tower. When you purchase an antenna usually retailers provide a description including the amount of signal gain in dB and miles so that you can see if it will be strong enough to pull in a signal from your location.

Indoor Antennas

Indoor antennas are a lot like non-amplified antennas in that they do not provide as much gain as their opposite, outdoor antennas. They are generally better for someone that only needs minimal signal gain. These antennas would be good for someone that doesn't need the extra power of an outdoor antenna and can almost get the channels they need as is.

Outdoor Antennas

Outdoor antennas are a lot like amplified antennas in that they provide more signal gain than their opposite, indoor antennas. These antennas are a good option for someone that needs more signal gain because they are extremely far away from the signaling tower. When purchasing one of these you can check each antennas product description and see how much signal gain (in dB and miles) each one has.

Dish Network TR-40 CRA Digital TV Converter Box Reviews (DTV)

Dish Network TR-40 CRA
This converter box is a great buy but if you are interested in the more expensive upgraded version you can check out the enhanced Dish Network DTVPal Plus.

Product Details: The Dish Network TR-40 CRA converter box provides one of the best pictures out of all available converter boxes. When comparing this converter boxes picture quality to others there were only several that were comparable. These ones included the Dish Network DTVPal Plus, Channel Master CM-7000, and Tivax STB-T8. When watching television with this converter box you get a picture quality that is close to DVD quality and significantly better than the average analog broadcast. The sound quality that you get with the Dish Network TR-40 CRA TV converter box is also very good. This converter box rates near the top for sound quality and provides viewers with the crisp clear sound that they desire.

The Dish Network TR-40 CRA has some of the best possible features available among all TV converters. This TV converter box comes with just about every feature you could imagine. The TR-40 CRA comes with one of the best electronic programming guides for a converter box. It's guide gives you information up to 7 days in advance and rivals the guide you get with a paid service like satellite and cable. It also comes with three easy to set aspect ratio settings. Another great thing about this TV converter box is that it is only one of a few that comes with a VCR tuner so that you can record shows in tandem with your converter box. It however only comes with one tuner so you cannot record one show while watching another.

The Echostar Dish Network TR-40 CRA is one of the best converter boxes money can buy. It comes with a ton of excellent features and the best picture quality available. Not only is it the best TV converter but it is also one of the cheapest ones. If you are looking for a digital converter box this one should be your choice, without a doubt.
