Do the Makaraba

Makaraba, is township slang for safety hat. Originally worn by supporters to soccer(football) matches as protection against flying bottles, a creative Kaizer Chiefs fan decided to carve and decorate his helmet to show his support for his beloved team. Of course when rival fans took notice, there was no way they were going to be outdone. This was the birth of what, along with the Vuvuzela, has become part of the South African sporting landscape.

A few weeks ago I met Michael Souter. For the past twenty years Michael has been in the Graphic Design industry as a designer and illustrator. Lately he has ventured into the art of the Makaraba. Each Makaraba he makes is custom made, and there is no team emblem he cannot fashion into a crowd attracting Makaraba. Check out some of his handiwork below.

If you support Western Province, Western Force, Red Sox, Dallas Cowboys, Calgary Flames, Barcelona FC, Miami Heat, Blue Bulls ... You can show that not only are you a serious supporter of your team, but that you are a South African!
Heck, even if you watch your sport at home, in front of the tv, you can ensure that your neighbour is in no doubt what team you are supporting.

Do yourself a favour and make contact with Mike for more information and place your order now. You don't want to be caught in the last minute 2010 rush now, do you?
