How to get your car stolen - for sure!

Wifey's girlfriend stopped at a kiosk for snacks, got out, left car running, and when turned around it was gone!. Now this was a 1985 Volkswagen Golf, Red Cabriolet (as if the pedigreed makes any difference) for a 23 year old car. Bear in mind it is also Ramadan period. This happened in New Cairo area with lots of migrant workers around, but as I corrected another's observation - these workers cannot drive. He responded - neither can ones with a driving license so what is difference. I stand corrected.

Obviously it was a spur of moment theft, as opportunity had presented itself. If he is thinking disassemble for spare parts - good luck. Can't be much market for a 23 year old car but then maybe I am wrong. Maybe motive was he was hot, thirsty, and hungry being a good Muslim fasting, and tired of waiting for the bus, so why steal car and get home easy way?

Car theft is not a widely known phenomena here in Cairo, Egypt and I have only heard of one other incident - again someone left delivery car running and when returned it had disappeared. I did read about a gang of car thieves police broke up a few years back. But as warning it can, and does happen, so take precautions.

Local joke -to defend against having car stolen disable the horn. If stolen it will be abandoned within 50 meters as no Egyptian can drive further than that without hearing the horn sound.
