Egyptian Prices and converisons

The Egyptian Currency is LE or pounds (and sometimes you will hear word "guinea" a hold over from past). Issued as 100 LE, 50 LE, 20 LE, 10 LE, 5 LE,1 LE, 50 piaster and 25 piaster notes, notes and recently a 200 LE note has been added and a 1 LE coin (see rarely)

Some price examples as of today 29/5/08

Beer in 5 star hotel - about $8 US, 4.5 Euros, 3.5 UK pounds (rounded) as of 29/5/08.
Buy same beer at off sales shop - $2 US, 1.2 euros, 1 UK pound.

Cigarettes are ridiculous prices and they just when up about 15%
USA brand names about little bit less than can beer off sales at 8 LE, L&M and this type 4.75 LE and local brand Cleopatra ? (forget it to cheap and smell like it). Killer prices eh!
These are made in Egypt under license and are pretty good. Egypt is a smokers paradises, but not so good for those wanting a smoke free area. Keep in mind the pollution downtown is likely equivalent to a few packs a day so those with Asthma chose a hotel more outside the city center area.

Beer and Wine are OK but your favorite whiskey, bourbon, vodka is not and prices at 5 star bars are formidable. As a tourist you can go to duty free and get 3 bottles booze and 200 cigarettes,(unless they changed the quantities recently) but you must do this within 24 hours of arrival by presentation of your passport. Shops are at Airport and I know of 2 in Maadi but other areas I am not sure.

Here is link that should be set up to help more easily with converting your currency from/to LE.

Kate, hope this helps.

Having a Drink in Egypt: Boozers Guide

Beer, Wine, Alcohol are readily available in Egypt. Locally made but don't let put you off. The favorite beer by far for all expatriates living here is Sakara (bottle or can), Heineken, followed by Stella ( the original beer and was nasty) but all changed a few years ago with introduction of El Gouna Brewery, who started up in direct competition to local brewery. They did so well, the local brewery bought them out. And even though there is a anti-monopoly law - this buy out went ahead. Beer in 5 star hotels can get to 35 LE(or more), pub restaurants about 25 LE, my private club 12 LE and at the booze off-sale stores 6 to 9 LE. (For purchases, Drinkies is most known but there are others). Also be advised in most establishments there is a 10% sales tax plus a 12% service charge on top of menu price- and they still expect a tip!
Wine I avoid as don't like what seems to be a formaldehyde flavor with exception of Grand Marquis.
Local spirits, whiskeys, gin, etc are lethal and I do not know anyone that has gone beyond the sample taste.
If you want to find a Drinkies, (ph 19330) or company called Cheers (19131) to find closet location, or get delivery phone. Not sure hotels with bars agree to delivery, but there are ways. Also, if you have cell roaming on mobinil dial 8000 for assistance for finding places or numbers. Also for travellers - recently announced the Grand Hyatt no longer serves alcohol - their 5 star rating and actually being able to keep Hyatt name is in question. If going there check ahead. Also do not know status of Hard Rock Cafe which is located at the Grand Hyatt - check ahead. Correction - the Croc advises the hard Rock cafe is wet for alcohol drinks and intends to stay that way.".
When in Cairo, keep your eyes open for a small book called Croc Free guide - wealth of great information for all including those of us living here.

I was going to write a bit more about Beers and Wine in Egypt but found this site that does a good job on the subject Link

Below is a listing of pubs found in Croc Free Guide. My favourites not included as they are Fusion(japanese - shusi etc.), TGIF, Grand Cafe (outdoors and favourites are shisha smokers), all located on Corniche (on Nile) at Entrance to Maadi (pronunced Ma-adi). All in same complex and all serve beer wine. In Maadi there are so many other pubs and restaurants you would need a guide dog.

Experiencing Ye Olde Cape Town

Thanks to a Muti post I stumbled across a Etienne Du Plessis' Flickr photostream. There are some amazing photo's and scanned postcards portraying a Cape Town long past, for better or worse.

Below is a postcard of the Cape Town 'International' from 1966.

Getting around

Cairo traffic is highly congested. Chaotic is a good description
-Painted traffic lanes are for decoration No one follows them in Cairo and there is a poor attempt on the faster ring roads. Locals refer the painted lines as "something the British left behind"
-Driving here is "who dares first".
-Newbies to Cairo are always shocked. It is proven here 2 lanes can be made to hold 4 lanes - or more.
-Horns are used for any reason. Local joke "to protect your car from theft - disable the horn and vehicle will be abandoned within 50 meters".
-Many vehicles do not use there lights at night, only to flash them at you on high beam about 50 meters away.
-Pedestrians are a nuisance.
-Parking space is a premium - cars can be seen parked 2 to 3 deep beside each other and does cause some major confrontations. Having a driver is fairly common so he can stay with car when dropping you off.
- Egypt highways are dangerous (reportedly 6000 deaths per year country wide). Personally I never drive any highway at night, and even avoid the lighted ring roads unless no other choice. I will update accident reports as they happen.
- A car without dents and scratches must be withing 100 meters of showroom where purchased.
- Black and white taxis are everywhere - no meters, tell destination to be sure he will take you and discuss fare first. Prices are reasonable if not downright cheap compared to Europe. Bear in mind the new law states to no taxis license can be renewed if cars is older than 20 years. Speaks for itself. The newer yellow cabs (phone for pickup) are metered and by all reports are very good with AC but expect them to usually be late to collect you.
- Minibuses drive like they are the "king of the road". Avoid! bigger city buses are for locals and usually terribly packed to even they are tilting and persons hanging our the door.
-Metro in Cairo is OK, but can be smelly in heat of summer (no AC) and can be very crowed at peak times (which lately seems to be all the day).
-Buses to other destinations (e.g. Sharm, Hurghada) are available and been told the El Gouna buses are best. Avoid night travel.
- Trains to Alexandria are barely OK but avoid other destinations unless you want a real experience you may not like.
-car rentals are available but first timers should be wary - traffic lights in Cairo are ignored (policeman will stick out his arm for traffic to stop), streets are poorly marked, and forget any in-car navigation system

But after all said - I drive without problems but only around my area Maadi and to New Cairo and Giza on ring roads, (but have 4 scratches on new car 6 months old as locals DO NOT know how to park etc.) Egyptian wifey drives a big black jeep and goes everywhere.

Medical Aid

The phone rings and the lady of the house answers, "Hello."
"Mrs. Smith, please."
"Speaking."
"Mrs. Smith, this is Doctor Jones at the Medical Testing Laboratory. When your doctor sent your husband's biopsy to the lab yesterday, a biopsy from another Mr. Smith arrived as well, and we are now uncertain which one is your husband's. Frankly the results are either bad or terrible."
"What do you mean?" Mrs. Smith asks nervously.
"Well, one of the specimens tested positive for Alzheimer's and the other one tested positive for AIDS. We can't tell which one is your husband's."
"That's dreadful! Can't you do the test again?" questioned Mrs. Smith.
"Normally we can, but your Medical Aid will only pay for these expensive Tests one time."
"Well, what am I supposed to do now?"
"The people at the Medical Aid recommend that you drop your husband off somewhere in the middle of town. If he finds his way home, don't sleep with him!"

Digital TV Converter Box Coupon Program

What is the DTV transition?

The DTV Transition will occur on February 17Th, 2009 at Midnight. At this time all full-power television stations will cease to provide analog TV signals and instead will switch over to 100% digital broadcasting.

Why are all stations changing over the 100% digital broadcasting?

The switch will eventually provide all consumers with better options but could be quite a hassle in the beginning. The end results of switching over will be that consumers will have better programming options and a clearer picture.

How will the DTV transition affect me?

If you are using an older television your television will become obsolete immediately on February 17Th at midnight. This means that all televisions channels will go to gray static and your televisions will only be useful for movies and videos games. In order to keep watching TV you will need to get an analog digital converter.

Can I do anything so that I can continue using my television after the digital transition?

Yes you can! You can by a digital analog converter for your television. If you buy a converter box and hook it up to your television you should be able to get all of the channels that you previously had. With the digital TV converters it is expected that you will get a significantly better picture that you had before. The jury is still out on these digital converter boxes because they are a relatively new product. I would suggest looking up digital converter box reviews and ratings so that you can see which ones work the best.

How much does a digital TV converter cost?

The price for most digital converter boxes ranges from $50 to about $70. You can get a more expensive analog digital converter but it is really quite unnecessary.

Where can a purchase a digital converter box?

DTV converter boxes can be purchased from most electronics stores like Best Buy and Circuit City. They can also be purchased at Wal-Mart and Target. There have been a lot of complaints and problems with the initial TV converters boxes so I would suggest searching the Internet for digital TV converter box reviews and digital converter box ratings to make sure you get one that will work well.

Are there any coupons available that can help reduce the cost of digital analog converters

Yes there are coupons available to reduce the cost of TV converters. As I said before the cost to purchase most digital TV converters is $50-$70 but you can actually get a converter box for about $10-$20. This is because the government has set aside roughly $1.4 billion to help Americans pay for their analog digital converter. If you go to the government dtv transition website you can apply for a coupon for $40 off your analog digital TV purchase. The only catch is these coupons expire after 60 days and there are a limited number of them. If you are interested in getting a TV converter box coupon and savings $40 on your digital tv receiver purchase I would suggest going to the website today to request a coupon card.

How many converter coupons can I get?

The government has set a limit of 2 analog to digital converter coupons per household. If you want or need more digital converter coupons you will have to use an alternate address or purchase one on eBay.

Is there anything else I can do besides purchase a converter box so that my television will continue working?

No, there is nothing else you can do to allow your current analog TV to continue working. The only other option is to by a new television that is made to pick up digital signals. The digital converter boxes essentially convert older televisions so they operate off digital signals like all new TVs.

Is there anything else I need to know about a digital converter or the dtv transition?

You should look at a digital converter box reviews to see how different converters are working. As I said before, I have read about there being many glitches and problems with the first converters.

Digital TV Converter Box Transition Information

What is the digital transition and when will it occur?

The digital television transition will officially occur on February 17th, 2009 at 12:00 a.m. midnight. At this time all full-power television stations with discontinue their television broadcasts in analog tv and will switch over to 100% digital broadcasting. Once the transition has been made it should provide consumers with better picture quality, more programming options, and it will also open up airwaves for emergency services.

How will the analog digital TV transition (DTV) affect me?

If you currently watch television on any analog TV that is not connected to satellite or cable then you will need to do something about it before February 17th, 2009 or it will affect you. If you do not act on February 17th, 2009 you will no longer be able to watch television stations on your TV without a digital converter. You will however still be able to use your TV for the viewing of DVDs, VHS, and the playing of video games.

Why is the DTV transition taking place?

The digital transition is taking place for a couple of reasons. The first reason being that it will provide a few benefits to consumers. The digital transition will allow consumers to get better picture quality and also will provide them with more programming options. The transition will also allow analog airwaves to be open to the police and fire department. The remaining airwaves will then be auctioned off to provide new wireless services.

Will the DTV transition affect me if I have cable or satellite?

No, if you have cable or satellite services you will still be able to use your analog television without digital converter boxes. There is no such thing as a digital cable converter right now so analog cable will still be functioning.

How do I know if I have an analog television?

If your television does not have a digital tuner in it then you will need a digital TV converter after February 17th, 2009. In order to find out if your TV has a digital tuner I would suggest consulting your owner's manual. If you do not have this anymore you can check on the internet for information about your specific TV model. If none of these options work then try taking a look at your television and see if it has an input connection for a "digital input" or "ATSC" (Advanced Television Systems Committee).

Are there any general guidelines to follow to quickly figure out whether my TV is analog or digital?

All TV sets that were made before 1998 are analog TVs. Any big screen TVs made between 1998 and 2004 could possibly have a digital tuner built into them. Usually though this is only the case with TVs of 42 inches or larger. If your TV was made after 2004 there is a significantly better chance that it has a digital tuner built in. If your TV is one of the older sets that does not have a build in digital tuner you will of course need an analog to digital converter to continue using your television.

What can I do to continue watching TV on my analog tv after February 17th, 2009?

You can either keep your TV and get an analog digital converter, subscribe to cable or satellite services, or purchase a new television that has a digital tuner.

What is a digital TV converter?

Digital TV converters are brand new products that just came on the market in early 2008. They are made to hook into your TV and convert digital signals so that they will be displayed on your analog television. Without a digital tv adapter your TV will no longer pick up TV signals.

What is the government converter box coupon program?

It is a government sponsored program that provides consumers with a $40 off coupon on the purchase of a digital to analog converter. Applications will be accepted between January 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009 with a limit of two coupons per household. They can be submitted through the mail, by fax, from the internet, or by phone at 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009).

Who is sponsoring the analog digital converter coupon program?

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) was appointed by Congress to handle the DTV converter box coupon program.

How do you install analog to digital converters?

They are installed by simply hooking them into a hookup spot on either the front or back of your television. TV converter box installation should be very easy and should only take a few minutes. Don't throw your antenna away either because you will need to use it in conjunction with your digital TV converter box. Sometimes however it does work better to get a specific digital tv antenna.

A Meditation on South African Citizenship

If being a South African means beating on the red door of a shack and demanding to see a green identity book – the dompas of citizenship, then I am a foreigner.

If being a South African means dragging a woman into the road to push up her skirt and drive my boot between her legs, then I am a foreigner.
If being a South African means sharpening my machete to split the skull of a man returning home from work, then I am a foreigner.
If being a South African means ripping an infant from the swaddling on its mother’s back to spit in its face wizened by terror, then I am a foreigner.
If being a South African means dropping concrete blocks on that mother’s head until it bursts like a ripe watermelon on the dry dust of my street, then I am a foreigner.
If being a South African means arrogating the roles of policeman, prosecutor, judge and executioner, then I am a foreigner.
If being a South African means hanging over my garden fence and watching the smooth skin of a man blister as he burns a live, then I am a foreigner.
For that skin was an infant’s once, caressed by a mother’s marvelling hand.
That skins is a man’s, and a lover’s hand passed over it, marvelling at its smoothness. That skin is a father’s, reached for in the night by a child afraid of the dark.
That burning skin was a man’s and if being a South African means I cannot feel that skin as my own
Then I am a foreigner.

Friday SA Music Spotlight - Crash Car Burn

I promised some readers something a little harder this week ...
Rising from the ashes of SA band Tweak in 2006 Crash Car Burn have become arguably SA's premier punk rock band.
They have paid their dues in Europe and continue to do so on the local festival scene, and continue to build a larger and larger following as well creating an awareness in the overseas markets via mainstream media avenues like MTVU's The Freshmen. You get the feeling that they are building towards a break through track that is going to see them hit the big time. However, in my humble opinion they haven't found yet. What I have heard from them is awesome but perhaps a little generic for the genre they find themselves. They need to find something within themselves that distinguishes them from the pack, not just locally, but globally.

Having said all that, they have continued to grow and become a tighter unit and their melodies more complex, and it is only a matter of time before that killer track blasts them into the stratosphere. There offerings rock, and can compete with the best the world has to offer.

No guys, work on http://www.crashcarburn.com/

Oops, there goes the Cape Town 27Dinner!!

While a Wiki page is great for collaborative efforts, sometimes there can be a downfall.

Like tonight, when a user, seemingly in error, managed to delete the Cape Town 27Dinner page when adding here name to the list of attendees.

I hope Dave and the boys can get hit an UNDO key somewhere ... I was too scared to touch anything.

Visting the UK? Be careful with the video camera!

Verity to celebrate milestone @ Kirstenbosch

On the 25th April this year on the Friday SA Music Spotlight I posted a piece on Verity. She is funding her cd release by involving those who pre-purchase her yet to be released album in the creation of it.
Since then she has reached the all-important 2000 pre-sales mark. This means she can fund the printing and posting of the album for those who have bought into the project.
As things have turned out, her concert this Sunday at the Silvertree Restaurant in Kirstenbosch will become a celebratory event.

With Nelson Malela on keyboards, Helder Gonzaga on bass and Frank Paco on drums she assures us it will be "high energy music filled evening" showcasing all the songs off the album!

If you would like to be there, please call 021 762 9585 asap to book a table. Tickets cost R100 & include a welcome drink & soup.

Free utility to check for software vulnerabilities

Every so often you hear, often via a long grapevine of some scary vulnerability that has been found in some piece of software. You panic, but then you hear you only have to worry if you are using version 3.4.33.2.8.a release 7b.....
So what version do you have and if you have version 3.4.33.2.8.a release 7c, do you still have to worry?
The solution to this, and more importantly to ensure you stay ahead of the grapevine, is to install Secunia Personal Software Inspector. This clever piece of free software scans your installed programmes and checks them against what Secunia has in its database as known issues. Secunia collects, evaluates, verifies, and analyses security information from public mailing lists, security and vendor websites, coordinated vulnerability reports, and internal research and gives it to us on a silver platter. No worries. And for free.
This is a great addition to the tools you should have in your arsenal to keep you protected for the baddies. You should already be behind a router, have a firewall, have an updated anti-virus installed and have some anti-spyware utility, and now the perfect weapon for a pre-emptive strike.

He has been billed as SA's first online musician, releasing his music in the online space only. Reading several write-ups and his own biography there has been a stream of thought that his music is somewhat emo-ish. I don't get that,
"A sexy mix of pop, rock, and electro, with catchy hooks", Yes. In fact there is a whole load eighties pop group 'Yes' stuck deep down is his sound. It's a great blast from the past for those who remember the late eighties mix of artists.
For someone who bought some cheap software and started recording and programming his own tracks the sound is rich and just complex enough for the discerning listener to keep listening long enough to appreciate the mix and lyrics but still poppy and catchy enough to be appreciated by the masses. Kind of like a thinking man's Mika!

Online, and accurate, SABC TV schedule

Here's a little online gem for those of you stuck with SABC programming.
The SABC press tool is a great online back door to check the latest TV schedules for their various TV channels including SABC Africa.
I find the SABC's various channel websites are not user friendly and are often out of date, so utilise this sight on the odd occasion. It's simple, quick and ,being a press tool, as accurate as you are going to get.

Nokia snubs South Africa

I went check to out the highly rated new Nokia N96. (It's a beaut by the way). Clicking over to http://www.nseries.com/ I was greeting with a little pop-up box, asking if I was willing to spend a few minutes filling in a little questionnaire. Being the obliging fellow I am, I agreed.
Page one asked me for my sex and age. Page two for my country or region I currently reside.
Now I know South Africa may not be Nokia's biggest market, but I would think that we rank a little higher than, let's say Solomon Islands?

... needless to say I did not continue. (Still want to get my hands on a N96 though)

Blonde Mortician

(I couldn't resist)

A man who just died is delivered to a local mortuary wearing an expensive, expertly tailored black suit.

The female blonde mortician asks the deceased's wife how she would like the body dressed. She points out that the man does look good in the black suit he is already wearing.

The widow, however, says that she always thought her husband looked his best in blue, and that she wants him in a blue suit. She gives the Blonde mortician a blank check and s ays, 'I don't care what it costs, but please have my husband in a blue suit for the viewing.'

The woman returns the next day for the wake. To her delight, she finds her husband dressed in a gorgeous blue suit with a subtle chalk stripe; the suit fits him perfectly.

She says to the mortician, 'Whatever this cost, I'm very satisfied. You did an excellent job and I' m very grateful. How much did you spend?' To her astonishment, the blonde mortician presents her with the blank check.

'There's no charge,' she says.

'No, really, I must compensate you for the cost of that exquisite blue suit!' she says.

'Honestly, ma'am,' the blonde says, 'it cost nothing. You see, a deceased gentleman of about your husband's size was brought in shortly after you left yesterday, and he was wearing an attractive blue suit. I asked his wife if she minded him going to his grave wearing a black suit instead, and she said it made no difference as long as he looked nice.'

'So I just switched the heads.'

Friday SA Music Spotlight - The Parlotones special on BBC

I am going to cheat and repeat a South African artist already highlighted on the Eish!! Friday SA music spotlight; The Parlatones.
The reason is simple. They were the featured band on BBC Bristol's Morning Glory. The show was aired last Saturday and is currently available to listen online until this Saturday. So you do not have too long left to catch it, if you are interested. The boys did an in-studio set and an interview with Andy Howard.

The show is available on the BBC iPlayer until Saturday 10th May - http://www.bbc.co.uk/bristol/ - click on "Listen Again", look for Morning Glory with Andy Howard..

I also really enjoy their video "I'll be there", so thought I would share it with you. This adds to their an awesome collection music videos that tell the story of the songs in a clever, quirky and visually flawless way.

Save energy searching the net

Blackle.com is a search page powered by Google. The concept is simple, a monitor displaying black uses less energy than one displaying white.

"Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002

The savings are tiny, but many tiny savings can make a big difference. In fact it is theorised, using total page views and the fact that a white page uses about 74 watts to display while a black page uses just 59 watts that the savings could reach 750 mega-watt hours a year.
Another important spin off is each time an individual uses the search page they are reminded of the importance of saving energy.

Why not do your little bit?

SABC imploding

Just a day after SABC's chief executive Dali Mpofu announced the suspension of group executive of news and current affairs Snuki Zikalala, he finds himself suspended.
While no mention was made of any link between the two suspensions, it is pretty obvious that there is one.
Yesterday, while refusing to divulge any details of the Zikalala suspension, Mpofu claimed "This is a matter that has to do with information that we received about sensitive documents of the organisation" but denied reports that the suspension had anything to do with the leaking of alleged differences between himself and the SABC board "It is actually unrelated to the media speculation around this issue. So timing in that sense was quite strangely unfortunate."
Snuki Zikalala was instrumental in and highly criticized for the creation of the SABC News' blacklist of political analysts critical of President Thabo Mbeki and his suspension was lauded by many.
My initial reaction to the Mpofu suspension was that this is the ANC laced SABC board taking action against someone threatening their important, strategically placed ANC apologist. After all Inside Politics wrote earlier today of the SABC board "board chairperson Eddie Funde has a list of ANC credentials that run from managing the placement, education and training of the hundreds of young ANC exiles during the 1970s to serving on the ANC’s NEC as recently as 2002. Another board member, Solly Mokoetle, ran Radio Freedom for the ANC in exile and Christine Qunta, when she’s not attacking the DA, is taking out full page adverts in various newspapers that do everything from criticise the media for not supporting the President enough to simply wishing him happy birthday. "
However you can add Mpofu himself to that list as he served the ANC as deputy head of its Social Welfare Department.
So is the nation, once again being dragged through the mud, embarrassingly, as the repercussions of the Polokwane power struggle continue to be played out in all institutions in which the ANC has, or wants control?

It seems as if this is going to get dirty!

An indestructable hard drive

Years after the Columbia disaster scientists have managed to glean useful information from a Seagate 400mb hard drive. The was onboard to records the results of an experiment to study the way xenon gas flows in microgravity.
While the reconstructing the debris the engineers found the hard drive and remarkably managed to retrieve 99 % of the data held on the drive.

Pretty impressive, I can picture the advert ... coming soon to a PC mag near you!

Friday SA Music Spotlight - Pat the Dog

It's a day early, but hey, it's the weekend.
I know very little about this week's artist. Pat The Dog is the creative oulet of Ray Goodfellow, a singer/songriter from Durban in South Africa. All Songs have been recorded at his home studio. He has managed to get played on a few podcasts around the world since he joined the Mevio (formerly Podshow). I enjoyed the simple guitar driven medleys.
It will be nice to hear more from Ray AKA Ray.
